Mkapa Fellows Alumni Association (MFAA) is a not for profit non-governmental organization with no political orientation established in 2009. The association is an output of the Mkapa Fellows Program which is a local initiative and has to date been implemented in 33 rural districts of Tanzania by recruiting 99 skilled health professionals through three different batches to work in rural underserved communities. Fellows scope of work has been developed with focus on providing technical guidance to the districts on provision of quality HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services with emphasis on scaling up these and other related health services to primary health care levels.

Constitutionally, Mkapa Fellows Alumni Association (MFAA) membership is only granted to employees who completed their contractual period with the foundation. Therefore, MFAA comprises of two groups of Fellows, those who have successfully completed their three years fellowship period and those mainstreamed into the public service before the end of their three years contract. However, also in accordance with the constitution there is room for other types of members to join the association.
The first group of fellows granted with membership for the Alumni were 24 Mkapa Fellows who completed the 3 years of service in the foundation and these are principally from Batch One Fellows.

In addition to that, there were 27 Fellows from Batch two and three who were already opted to join the public service and hence eligible for membership.

Vision of MFAA

MFAA envisages to be a strong leading network, dedicated and committed to improving quality of health and related services and scaling-up HIV/AIDS services particularly to underprivileged communities.

Mission Statement

The Mkapa Fellows Alumni Association is committed to taking a leadership role in the provision of quality, equitable and accessible services in the area of HIV/AIDS, Reproductive and Child Health and other health related services for the underserved communities in developing counties through care and treatment, HIV testing services, advocacy, capacity building and medical and social research as well as ensure networking among Alumni members.

Objectives of MFAA

  1. To establish and sustain e-networking among MFAA members in order to share knowledge on research findings regarding HIV/AIDS.
  2. To improve capacity of the other health care workers.
  3. To develop collaborations with other health implementing partners in enhancing initiatives of MFAA members and promoting opportunities for consultancy with other health stakeholders, particularly those in the area of HIV/AIDS.
  4. To advocate through campaigns and development of a website, directory, plus other channels in order to publicize the work conducted by MFAA members.
  5. To promote, coordinate and oversee activities being done by MFAA members in their work stations in order to up hold standards in the provision of quality health services, particularly HIV/AIDS services.
  6. To solicit and mobilize funding from different sources including government, development partners and other donors to facilitate the implementation of the MFAA objectives as per strategic plan.
  7. To contribute to National Human Resource for Health Policy and strategy.

First Annual General Meeting For Mkapa Fellows Alumni
The first annual general meeting for Mkapa Fellows Alumni Association (MFAA) was held on 20th November, 2009 at Millennium Towers in Kijitonyama. The meeting was launched by Dr. Deo Mtasiwa the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for MOHSW under the representation of Dr. Donan Mbando, Director of Preventive Services. In July 2005, then President of Tanzania, H.E. Benjamin William Mkapa and the former US President H.E. William Jefferson Clinton launched the Benjamin William National HIV/AIDS Fellows program. The aim was to recruit, train and deploy highly skilled health workers to server rural areas.
