About Health Systems Strengthening

The Government of Tanzania and its partners are committed to the equitable delivery of quality health services. It is important for the nation to achieve this equity by having adequate and skilled staff that is motivated and well equipped. The Benjamin William Mkapa HIV/AIDS Foundation (BMAF), as a sub-recipient and with the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) is among the key stakeholders working to achieve this goal, through Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) project (2011- 2016) that is funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria- Round Nine (9).

   Caring for people living with HIV/AIDS and other health sufferings through

enhancing health workforce in rural areas

Under this HSS Initiative, Tanzania will aim to achieve the following goals by 2016:

  • A 97% increase in student intake in the health professions, leading to an increase in the density of skilled health workers of 34%, leading to an increase of health staff available to administer Antiretrovirals medication (ARVs), malaria treatment, and TB regimens.

 Presence of tutors contribute to increased student intake in Health training institutions

Reduced percentage of rural-urban disparity (which is currently at 30%) and reduce staff attrition rates as a result of constructed/rehabilitated staff settlements for 700 worker

 Attracting and retaining health workers in rural areas through constructing

staff houses at health facilities areas

  • Improved performance through effective, efficient and coordinated leadership and management practices of the Council Health Management Teams (CHMTs), Hospital Management Teams, TB, HIV/AIDS, and Malaria coordinators, thus improving service delivery across 134 districts.
