International XIX AIDS Conference 2012 -Voluntary Male Circumcision Reduces, HIV Infections, Former President Reveals

Former President of Tanzania, His Excellency Benjamin William Mkapa in 19th International AIDS conference in Washington DC.

Former President of United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency, Banjamin William Mkapa has called for Presidents of African countries to take deliberate action of creating awareness on importance of male circumcision as one of ways to reduce new HIV infections in Africa.

His Excellency Mkapa aired the views when closing a forum at the 19th International AIDS Conference in Washington DC, United States of America. More than 22,000 people attended the conference from 22nd to 27th July 2012.

Former President of Tanzania, His Excellency Benjamin William Mkapa closing panel discussion on voluntary male circumcision which has proven to reduce HIV infection rate during 19th International AIDS conference in Washington DC.

The panel discussion on voluntary male circumcision attracted hundreds of members from Africa were moderated by Ms. Brenda Wilson from South Africa. Members were elaborated the scientific researches on how male circumcision reduce HIV infections.

His Excellency Mkapa added it is important for African leaders to implement the plan as per research done among African men as the initiative reduces HIV infections by 60 percent. This he said is a huge milestone in ongoing efforts to fight HIV/AIDS scourge.

It was further declared that in order to realize plans for voluntary male circumcision, African countries have to develop policies and clear strategies to fight with HIV/AIDS scourge. Also the plans and strategies have to be owned by the people of specific countries so that they fully participate in its implementation. Policies and plans of fighting HIV/AIDS pandemic have to be implemented in transparent manner so that African communities realize the impact of the disease.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Voluntary Circumcision project for PEPFAR, Dr. Emmanuel Njeuhmeli confirmed on the research findings and gave an example of Zimbabwe where HIV infection rate has reduced by 45 percent in a period of five years since inception of voluntary male circumcision.Others who contributed their views in the panel discussion included Angelo Kaggwa (Uganda), Her Excellency Dr. Speciosa Wandira (Uganda), Ms. Henrica Okondo (Kenya), Chief Jonathan Mumema (Zambia), His Excellency Oburu Odinga (Kenya), Her Excellency Dr. Christine Ondoa (Uganda) and His Excellency Blessing Chebundo (Zimbabwe).

Former Presidents, His Excellency Joachim Chissano of Mozambique and His Excellency Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia who are championing on the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic famously knows as “Champions for AIDS Free Generation” also attended the discussion.

His Excellency Mkapa attended the HIV/AIDS conference on invitation by Champions for AIDS Free Generation Foundation, which is lead by Former President for Botswana, His Excellency Festus Mogae. His Excellency is among the eight champions for the Foundation.
