REPORT ON CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM FOR BENJAMIN WILLIAM MKAPA FELLOWS ON EFFECTIVE SUPERVISION, NETWORKING, COMMUNICATIONS AND PRESENTATION SKILLS CONDUCTED FROM 30th AUGUST 2010 to 3rd SEPT. 2010

1.    Introduction

The Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation (BMAF), through the MKAPA Fellow program has been implementing a program for recruiting, placement and retention of health workers in underserved Districts in Tanzania; in order to minimize the problem of shortage of health workers in the target areas in the Country. The program is being implemented through the generous support of the Norwegian Government. Since the inception of the program, there have been deliberate efforts to build the capacity of the MKAPA Fellows   in various leadership, quality management and a wide range of Human Resources for Health (HRH); in order to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness at work place.

In August, 2010, BMAF conducted training to the last batch of MKAPA Fellows to cover diverse areas; including Supervisory Skills, Networking, Communications and Presentation Skills. The major objective was to prepare the Fellows to face new challenges as they step out of the MKAPA Fellow program in December 2010

The Training was conducted for five days from 30th August to 3rd September, 2010 at Millennium Tower in Dar es slaam, and attended by the Batch three Mkapa fellows from different Districts where they were deployed.

The reminder of this brief report presents the methodology used by consultants to deliver the training and a synopsis of training modules conducted.

2.    Course Design and Delivery Methodology:

Philosophy of learning/training

Various learning styles were used through the programme including a mix of presentations, personal study and activities.  Participants were able to strengthen their skills and knowledge in all aspects of supervisory skills, networking, communications and presentation skills.

Trainers designed the training course and utilised role plays as practical and experiential as possible.  This is because the best-remembered and most frequently applied learning comes from active engagement and “doing”.

"I hear and I forget,
I see and I remember,
I do and I understand."  Confucius

Learning is more effective when participants are put in situations where they are required to make decisions, even if they do not have a full understanding of the theoretical rationales. This approach ties in with M.S. Knowles “androgogical” model of adult learning.  Knowles states that adults have a psychological need to be perceived by others, and treated by others, as capable of taking responsibility for themselves.
