The Benjamin William Mkapa HIV/AIDS Foundation is a non-profit making, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established and incorporated under the Trustees Incorporation Ordinance, CAP 375. It was established in February 2006 aiming to complement the national efforts in addressing HIV/AIDS pandemic. The Foundation was established after the launching of its first programme known as the Mkapa Fellows Programme in July 2005. Currently the Foundation is overseeing two initiatives namely Mkapa Fellows Programme and Emergency Hiring Project whereby both focus on accelerating HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment in the context of addressing Human Resource for Health challenges. 




Objectives of the Foundation

  • To function as a non governmental organization in supplementing and complementing efforts of the government by enhancing the delivery of quality HIV/ AIDS care, treatment and other related services to Tanzanians.
  • To solicit and receive funds from other entities and organizations for international groups. To promote and strengthen cooperation between local and international groups.
  • To offer training and education, formal and non-formal, among Tanzanians for the purpose of increasing technical proficiency.
  • To promote national and international policies and strategies aiming at alleviating HIV / AIDS and related ills.
  • To work with or in collaboration with or affiliation to any other institution locally or internationally to furthering the objectives of the trust.
  • To help vulnerable rural communities with insufficient human services in areas of personnel and health care services.
  • To carry out training on prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infection and family planning education for both rural and urban communities.
  • To involve people living with HIV and AIDS in community education and fight against AIDS.


Functions of the Foundation

  • Liaise and work in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare , TACAIDS and other stakeholders in the efforts of scalling up HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment.
  • Propose and create different programmes that operate under the umbrella of the Foundation.
  • Ensure effective implementation of all programmes according to the Foundation policy.Recruit, train and deploy Fellows to fill the critical gap in Human resource particularly in the mostly hit districts.
  • Provide logistic support to Fellows.
  • To budget and ensure proper utilization and account for expenditure of funds.
  • Mobilizes funds for running the programmes from different sources.
